Now that’s just NOT NICE!!!!!

Last week I asked you for your opinion on the marriage of a couple of my jewelry techniques. I thought I handled the negative comments quite well. I actually giggled at the Bleck comment and laughed out loud at “I don’t want to look like a badly decorated Christmas Tree”. So not to be out done, I kept at it and came up with a brooch design I really liked. I showed it to a friend who shall remain nameless as many of you know her. (Don’t worry she is not seeing this post.) Her comment RUINED it for me. Being the mature person I am I told her she could ruin ice cream on a hot day. Here is my creation.

tarancula

She said it looks like a Smashed Tarantula!!! Sorry to my dear friend that got it as a birthday gift. 😦 What Say YOU!!!!

Funny WWII Story – It’s possible!

     GI               BobPink 2

On our way to a mini family reunion, Bob (My Dad) announces he is antisocial. Seriously? My Dad is about as antisocial as a baby kissing politician. This will inspire another post entitled, “How to tell your Dad he is full of crap and live!” I’ll post this as soon as I figure out the live part. Anyway, I am astounded to hear this because the night before he tells us this never heard before WWII story about how he inadvertently became his boot camps social director. Dad, What gives here?
Here’s the story and you decide.
In 1944 at the age of 18 my Dad is drafted and is shipped off to Texas for boot camp. After boot camp all of his buddies get shipped off to France. Next wave of draftees come in and Bob has to go through boot camp again as they don’t know what to do with him. All these recruits are shipped off. Meanwhile, no shipping orders for Bob. So because Bob has been in camp so long he becomes the impromptu social director because he knows the town inside and out. To this day he can still remember the names of the best bars and restaurants in that town.  After 5 waves of draftees pass through, Bob goes to the officer in charge and finds they have no record of Bob. By now, the war is winding down and Bob is shipped off to a camp in Indiana for the duration. Now on the surface, this is quite funny and really in keeping with the goof ball things that have happen to Bob in his life. But a more sobering perspective is what if he got shipped off to Europe and killed when he could have simply walked away from camp and no one would have been the wiser. Just sayin! Please let me know if anyone out there has a funny WWII story?

While I was home I came across a new phrase for dangle earrings. Shoulder Dusters!  Isn’t that cute? So I made these for my gal friend’s birthday. Would you wear these? I usually don’t make earrings but I thought these have possibilities for my store. What do you think?

Do you Dior?

Little known Christian Dior Facts…

A woman’s perfume tells more about her than her handwriting.’ – Christian Dior
Unlike many of his fashion contemporaries , Christian Dior was born into a wealthy French family. Dior was born in Granville, a coastal town in Normandy, France in 1905. His father was a wealthy businessman who owned a fertilizer company, and the family moved to Paris, when Dior was about five years old.  Christian Dior is one of the best known names in fashion and he has been accredited with bringing many new styles to women’s fashion. Initially though, women didn’t like his styles very much, because many of his designs used yards of fabric and covered up their legs, and below are ten more facts about Christian Dior, the master of shapes and silhouettes, that might surprise you:
1.   His parents wanted him to be a diplomat
2.   Christian Dior was inspired by architecture
3.   Christian Dior was very superstitious
4.   Dior once owned an art gallery and displayed Picasso
5.   He died of unknown cause at the age of 52
6.   Dior employed Yves Saint Laurent at 19 as a design assistant
7.   Dior designed dresses for Nazi officer’s wives while his sister
       fought for the French resistance
8.   He was accused of using too much fabric in WWII
9.   His creations were favoured by the rich and the famous
10. He was the first couturier to license his designs. Critics said
he cheapened the Haute Couture industry.
Stay beautiful!

While I was home my mother gave me some of her Dior costume jewelry remnants. I loved this earring. So I made this pearl motif using the earring. What do you think? Love all your feedback.

PS My husband said, “I guess a guy that grew up in a fertilizer company would know something about what effects a woman’s perfume had!” 🙂

May I give you some advice?

While doing the Crow Pose in Yoga…

This is not me!!! But while attempting this pose, please note the word attempting, our delightful instructor reminded us of our intention for the day which was working through fear. She then told us about her fear as a child. Like so many young girls she was always concerned and fearful about what other people thought of her. She confided this fear to her grandmother. Her grandmother told her it was none of her damn business! I love the simplicity and merit to this advice. This has stuck with her all of her life and it got me thinking about all the sage advice I have gotten from my grandmother and mother.

My Grandmother: When the neighborhood boys refused to play with me she said, “Some day you’ll have to carry a big stick!” At 6 I didn’t understand the meaning and wondered why I would want to beat them with a stick as they already didn’t want to be around me?

My Mother: “Get a good education, don’t rely on you looks, make your own money and don’t get married!” Sorry about the last one Mom. Made it to 37 though! And, we know how much you love Richard.

Now that I have shared with you,  I hope you will take a moment and share some guiding advice with me.

Just Zip It!

Did you know The Duchess of Windsor designed….

In the 1930s, The Duchess thought the Zipper would make an interesting design for a necklace. Her design was called The Zip and became a rage in England. Later in the 1950s, Van Cleef and Arpels made this design with beautiful diamonds, rubies and various precious stones. I was fresh out of diamonds so I chose faux pearls and shells instead!

Zipper
Did you know the Zipper was invented in 1851 by Elias Howe, founder of the sewing machine?  It flopped and was re-engineered 44 years later by Whitcomb Judson of Street Car fame.

I’ve been texted???

I have several friends that are in my age neighborhood…

that are doing the online dating thingy. Honestly, I would rather scrape paint but the one thing that is universally complained about is texting. No one talks on the phone anymore. It’s like my niece, Erica, said to me a couple of years back. “Aunt Carol, everyone knows you’re old.” I beg your pardon? “Only old people leave messages. I know you called.” Humph! So, those of you that have been with me awhile know how my brain works… I got to thinking about texting and that lead me to texture. Sorry, it’s messy in my head!
Last week I told you I was into fiber but I realized that wasn’t really correct. It’s texture that attracts me. Think about the Twisted Sister Technique. It’s all about using hundreds of beads etc. I was exploring texture when I stumbled on to Viktor & Rolf Couture. OMG! Have a peak and I hope you’ll enjoy the video.

Who is going to believe me now?

I never consider myself a shiny object chaser….

but now I think I need to reconsider. But while I was reconsidering, I stumbled onto something even more disturbing. (Not for You but for Me!) In my last blog, I mentioned that I ordered sari ribbon not because I needed it but because I have issues with using things up. All weekend, I have been creating and designing new necklaces using sari. Lot’s of fun! I had just finished a really wild piece (Wild For Me!) when I get this blog post about Dsquared2 2016 Collection. I had never heard of Dsquared. Have you? This picture floats by:

Dsquared2

So what’s the big deal? Well, I just finished making a necklace that is VERY similar and I think to myself no one is going to believe that didn’t copy this idea. We all know I have copied lots of Chanel designs and I never tried to hide it. But it’s kind of like lying.  Once you’re caught lying anything you say is suspect. Enough with the suspense.  Here is the necklace Dsquared2 knocked off!!!! Believe it or not!
